Dog Talk

My brother, Kevin, just got a new job at Urban Outfitters. His job description is something like, "Make up funny shit we can post on our confusing-as-shit blog". Fart, even I could do that. He started by interviewing hot girls in his office and their dogs. Dude IS a McGuinness.
He also makes art. As in, creates things to look at. You can look at his website here: www.kevinquinnmcguinness.com
Im guessing that Im gonna have to relinquish my title of favorite son pretty soon.

Debt of Nature

http://rapidshare.com/files/71879462/fromLivePerformance1984-1986.zip.html

Live jams from this LAFMS retardo supergroup circa 84-86, and for my money, one of the most satisfying listens of the Society's entire recorded output. Jarring soundtracks to the market death drive. "You can jack off with less equipment."

Mutant Sounds sez: "the improvs here exemplify an approach to the form that find the numinous in the ludicrous; power tools and kazoos engage in death matches with surreal splices of tape collage and belching and retching emerge from stormclouds of surging audio generator roars in this domain where dada is yahweh."

ones/hands - 1997-2005

enjoyed the hell out of this yesterday

http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=9b57090be7a9542fd2db6fb9a8902bda

some review from some blog:

So my friend Russ Waterhouse has been running the high-quality, low-quantity White Tapes label off and on for years through various mysterious Brooklyn-located apartments, and 2005 has seen a re-birth of this ongoing concern. One of this year’s new ones is the collaboration CD by Ones and Hands, two American noisy units obscure by even most obscurists’ standards. Having only seen Ones in action, I feel confident in describing their modus operandi as officially awesomely weird: two dudes, crouching low over tables full of tiny objects, make atonal rattly creaky drony soft and oddly compelling noises. I’m assuming they’re responsible for most of those-type sounds on the disc, whereas I assume Hands provides the sweetly melodic guitar and drones that drift in and out, like the sounds of the street outside an open window. The combination of disparate elements makes this CD a fun time for fans of inscrutability, audio-style. Highly recommended.

More entries on White Tapes stuff forthcoming.

CORRECTION MAY 12: Ok, thanks to the benevolent stranger in the comments box, I learned that Hands is actually Hands To, aka Jeph Jerman. I think maybe Russ told me this but I forgot it. Whoops. And Nick from Ones plays the sweet guitar, so that’s good to know.

What planet are we on...

This is an interview with Thomas Friedman from the other day on the radio.
He doesn't say anything that I don't think we aren't already thinking, I think.
However, he puts it in an alarmingly thoughtful way that encompasses a TON of shit.
From top to bottom.

Oblique Strategies

For those of you with Macs, you can download this application that adds the set of cards Oblique Strategies to your dashboard. Made famous by Brian Eno, it is obscure advice that is supposed to help the creative process by adding an element of randomness and chance to it.

Here is a video I put up on youtube of the Killer Whales, who are easily one of my favorite bands from Chicago to see live - I hope this video helps demonstrate why.

Corpulent/Indescribable

Give this one a shot, if you like the first 3 minutes, you'll like the next 40. I caught this broadcast on FMU while in the mountains. From "The Dusty Show, With Clay Pigeon." It was like a Sherwood Anderson x Orson Welles mashup. Otherwise, difficult to summarize.

10 Best Chi Peps Vids on youtube

This is a post Zac Davis made on his myspace blog like a year ago. It is worth revisiting:

Thursday, April 26, 2007

10 best chi peps vids on youtube
Current mood: savage

the other day i spent about 4 hours searching youtube for all things chi peps.... chad smith drum solos, flea bass solos, chad and flea jamming together, acoustic versions of songs, interviews, covers etc..... this is the best of the best.... also if you didnt know the chi peps all have arrest records for sexual assault:

10. http://youtube.com/watch?v=xD8V4Ck3x5c
this is on the list for the stellar vocal performance homegirl delivers.... killer comments too: "nice, really! your singing and playing fits, and it's just a great song.
One little thing: don't wanna patronize you and I don't know if its all your intentention to play the song the way you do, but originally, before the verses start (eg "I drive on the streets") on E major 7th fret there's this very nice E Maj 7 chord with root on the A-string to build up tension... have you ever considered to play that?"

9. http://youtube.com/watch?v=5Lf_CEzqQfA
this one really fucks with you.... its like "this is the most awful shit ever, when is snoop gonna come out"..... then 4 minutes in he finally does its like the most underwhelming experience of your life.... also kiedis looks seriously smacked out

8. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZDGzuc7jcDw&mode=related&search=
you could youtube a glass of ice metling and there would be more action then we get here.... but for real when this bassline kicks in, you can just feel flea's soul living through this young mug..... also why does he look so nervous before he plays? it makes for real tense watching

7. http://youtube.com/watch?v=TCjfvWbhqUk
this one is fucking unreal.... i even left a comment on it..... the bass drum cam is so next level.... like heath said earlier 'if you're ever in a bad mood just put this on and it will be over in 2 seconds'

6. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ci8JoUBALRA
watch and learn

5. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ci8JoUBALRA
this one is even sicker than the one before it..... dude is real good at throwing his stix in the air and catching em which is more than i can say about most drummers.... like my man cms6506 says "one of the best live drummers out there. Not only for skill, but also for the fact that he has fun while playing and gets the crowd into it. amazing video."

4. http://youtube.com/watch?v=KQFXRIR9wV8
did you know flea wrote songs for the peps on "one hot minute"? would you believe lyrically hes on par with anthony? well all you disbelievers just check this one

3. http://youtube.com/watch?v=DKOc2S1AkjE
this one kind of takes the cake..... live on a boat in amsterdam 92, smacked out of their minds, just sounding so awful..... every guitar player should be required to learn how frusciante grooves...... he looks killer

2. http://youtube.com/watch?v=wFxDo_u9Aw4
i think i am officially gay after watching this one

1. http://youtube.com/watch?v=nkWg6PQx_qk
yeah this is the best one..... just some dude playing along to an mp3 of "under the bridge"... all you see the whole time is his guitar.... misses the first 8 seconds on the jam cause hes gotta click the mouse to start it..... the youtube community gives this dude a lot of props, people want lessons from him and shit

frank perry

so frank perry was a free improv drummer (early 70s, played w/evan parker, etc) and then became a buhddist, focusing on solo percussion, prayer bowls, healing sounds, etc....he has made like over a hundred records. if you haven't checked out the ones posted to the crystal vibes blog you should. heavy stuff.

he just posted some vids on youtube. this is pt 1 of an entire concert. healing vibes...

really weird video...

the comments from robert fisk about obama's likely foreign policy are not suprising but this video is odd

Be Glad Im Not Your Dad

http://www.sendspace.com/file/4upngc

Here are two songs that a band in which I sing just recorded for a 7". The first one doesnt have a title but the words are transcribed from a voicemail Evan left me while on his way to Target. Maybe Ill just call it Going to Target.

The second song I dont even remember doing. Im not sure what I was saying, but there is the sound of a empty Hurricane bottle being banged against the toilet. Im not at the point where I can sing or whatever it is I do without being drunk. Im getting there. Even more noticeably, I seem to have no idea how to sean mcguinness along with a band.

This band is called Birth Control.

N.O.U. Video

Later video as a 4 piece. It was the 90s, there is crowd surfing. Yes.

Summer/Spring (?) Jam

Oh yeah, here is something Al, James, Otto, Kit, and I did awhile back (sometime before that Naked on the Vague show). Although lots of it is totally ridiculous, there are some inspired moments. Definitely lazy weekend afternoon vibes w/ lots of beer.

Like so

Shocks of Mighty

For those of you that maybe didn't get this when I first posted it, here is my first effort at dub music. James laid down the bass & rhythm, and I overdubbed some guitar, and mixed it. Nothing groundbreaking obviously, but certainly a nice thought experiment, and easy enough on the ears.

I hadn't listened to this track in awhile. The Pop Group demonstrated that the Nietzschean critique of of the transvaluation of all values and disco were meant to go together, in case anyone was wondering. And nice stage moves, even.

pairings

here's some stuff i've been recording on my 4-track over the last couple weeks.
tried to focus on just pairing 2 relatively simple sounds/tracks together. there's no real arc or form to any of it, just kind of repeating irregularly.
i used: xo laptop running tam tam jam, language master, octave pedal, gate, fuzz factory, soft plastic "roll-up" keyboard i got for $5 in the kids toy section of the grocery store, walkman.
tell me what you think.

Food For Animals - "Girl Talk"

Food For Animals - "Girl Talk"

Ah yes. There is an inherent funny coincidence in the dude's new album name ("Feed The Animals"). So we decided that we wanted to rap over a (redesigned/fucked) part of one of his songs. But wouldn't it be funnier if we sampled other people's lyrics? And WHAT IF THE PEOPLE WERE WOMEN? Thus "Girl Talk".

in preparation for the weekend

Neon - Skydiver

Africa: D.I.Y. or Die

Here's a really nice article in today's issue of the Chicago Reader about a new breed of labels putting out African music that are driving a point home that everyone should already know: Africa is a modern, creative spirit.

Africa on the Ground

you SF people know these guys? I guess it's time to revisit drum and bass (finally)...but with some world music twist. I got a link to this muxtape and I'm pretty into it.

Japrocksampler

In the same spirit as the Krautrocksampler Julian Cope published a book on 70s Japanese heavy/psychedelic/free etc. rock music. I find his writing totally grating, his opinions often wrong, and he also has a knack for getting facts wrong when he isn't just making them up. On the other hand, he does talk about some interesting music. Anyone else interested in this music would be advised to check this link out:

perhaps unrelated: "A recently-introduced law in Japan requires all businesses to have mandatory obesity checks for all their employees and employees' family members over the age of 40, CNN reports. If the employee or family member is deemed obese, and does not lose the extra fat soon, their employer faces large fines. The legislated upper limit for the waistline is 33.5" for men, and 35.5" for women. By comparison, the average waistline in America in 2005 was 39 inches for men, 37 inches for women."

Here are some super-rough mixes of new-ish bingles, possibly 2 sidelong tracks for an upcoming LP. Hopefully Chris won't want to kill me for posting this. You can hear a fire engine drive by with sirens blaring during the first track. I kind of don't want to take it out.

Jo Jo Mayer

I dont have any mp3s or anything current, but I showed up with a desire to contribute.

Like most drummers, Jojo Mayer's bands are totally wack and not worth the time. For whatever reason big time drummers who do drummer festival tours and wear SONAR t-shirts and PEARL sponsored underwear think its OK to start Fusion bands so they can jerk-off on their drums. His solo playing is unreal. He was born in Zurich in 1973 and started playing drums when he was 2. By the time he was 18 he was playing some wierdo jazz thing blah blah whooo cares. Dude can do one handed rolls with both hands AND BOTH FEET. This is some sweet drum and bass beat that opens his sploogie dvd. The slow motion is kinda cool, slightly lame.

Last Entry for the Night

Here is a practice tape of the last time Scalpels practiced. This will likely be our last song. We will probably be playing one or two more shows before James and I leave the Midwest behind. Since this is a rough draft of an idea any criticism is welcome with the caveat that we already know that the parts drag on too long.

Scalpels - End of Metaphysics

Meditation1

This is a jam I did a couple of weeks ago with Chris & Ken. When we got together the first jam we did was like a lot of shredding. Then Chris said, lets try doing something more restrained. This was the result of that... that and also getting nice. It started out with a lot of space and dissonance. Somewhere along the way Ken & I intertwined into some sort of harmony, and so the recording changes from its initial chilliness into a brief warmth towards the end. The weather that day was totally chill, literally. When I went back home the fog was so thick you could barely see ahead. After playing shit like this it was definitely deep space forever.

Meditation1

mp3s

just posted these 5 mp3s to my bandmates for a mix that we are doing to go along with an interview in some LA based (maga)zine....not really sure what the deal is, think its their first issue....

anywho....maybe you'll enjoy them. a few things i've been obsessed with lately, a few constant burners and a random new find (thanks to brian's blog)....nothing too "mindbreaking" but good vibes.

here they are....

yeah so i read the wire for the first time in a while since there was that gas/w. vogit feature which i'm still reading but i was more moved (so far) by the carl craig invisible juke. luckily there is an unedited version on the web here

Feelin' It

TP Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo are from Benin. Benin is located between Nigeria and Ghana, both countries have massive musicians that are just killing it. I haven't seen as many big ups to Benin though, but with the internet that just means I haven't looked in the right places. In the coming days I hope to share with you everything righteous that I find from the area. This jam makes me really stoked about being a musician. The way the guitar interacts with the rest of the instruments reminds me of the Ex. There's that hypnotic quality to it that could make it go on forever. And that's what jams in the summer are all about, keeping the energy flowin'. Dig the psychedelic background of course too.

Ever Get the Feeling You've Been Fired?

Blessed Birthday Beats

I'm 25 today. 1/4 century! It has been pretty chill so far. I had a long bike ride, and got a little Ableton 7 upgrade from my excellent dad. I wanted to put up some particularly posi or otherwise wise music and here it is:

The Intruders - Together
This song is so awesome to play air drums to; I first experienced this sensation when I played this song for Mi Amigo DMM. Ha. This song is such a decadent headbanger of a record.

MK - Strider (via RealFresh)
DETROIT. I got this from the amazing Real Fresh Blog channel on yatube.

J Dilla - Track 24.mp3
I dunno what this is called, but it is the creepiest dark sample-disco ever. From the "Munchkins" file that floated around the internet at one point. A beast.

Camp Lo - Luchini
